YVR to Whistler: your transfer options compared
You have landed at Vancouver International and the mountains are still a couple of hours away. There are four main ways to cover the last stretch, and each suits a different kind of trip.
How far it is
Whistler is roughly 130 km from YVR. The route crosses Vancouver, heads over the Lions Gate Bridge and follows the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Highway 99) along Howe Sound and up through Squamish.
In good conditions the drive takes around two to two and a half hours. Snow, collisions and holiday traffic can add considerably more, particularly from December to March.
Scheduled airport coach
Several companies run scheduled coaches between YVR and Whistler. You buy a seat, board at a set time and are dropped at a stop or hotel in Whistler.
- Works well for: solo travellers and couples on a budget with flexible plans.
- Keep in mind: departures run to a timetable, so a delayed flight can mean a long wait for the next one, and luggage and ski allowances vary.
Rental car
A rental car gives you freedom once you are in the mountains, and it can make sense for a long stay with day trips planned.
- Works well for: confident winter drivers who want a car for the whole trip.
- Keep in mind: from October 1 to March 31 the Sea-to-Sky Highway requires winter tires (the mountain and snowflake symbol, or M+S, with at least 3.5 mm of tread), so confirm your rental has them. After a long flight, a mountain highway in the dark is a demanding drive, and parking in Whistler Village is usually paid.
Private car service
A private transfer meets you at the airport, loads your bags and skis, and drives you straight to your door in Whistler.
- Works well for: families, groups, business travellers and anyone arriving late, early or tired.
- Keep in mind: it costs more than a coach seat for one person, but the price is per vehicle rather than per passenger, so for a family or a group the gap narrows quickly.
With flight tracking, the car is timed to when you actually land, and you can stop in Squamish for groceries or a coffee on the way.
Floatplane or helicopter
In some seasons, floatplanes and helicopter charters fly between Vancouver and Whistler, weather permitting. It is the fastest and most scenic option, and the most expensive, with strict luggage limits. Most travellers still need ground transportation at one end or both.
Which option to choose
If you are travelling light and alone, a scheduled coach is hard to beat on price. If you want a car for your whole stay and are comfortable on winter roads, rent one. For everyone else, and especially for families and groups with luggage and skis, a private car service is the simplest way to go from the arrivals hall to the mountains.
